Sir Knights of Piedmont Commandery #26:  01 December, 2009

 From the Commander’s Apartment

From the Commander’s Apartment

Will the groundhog see his shadow?  Will the future be a little brighter?   February is of course the month of Presidents for whom we owe a debt of gratitude for their service and then finally, don’t forget your sweethearts as Valentine’s day rapidly approaches.   Will our Commandery become revitalized?  What lies ahead?  None of us know the answer and there is little we can do to change the ultimate outcome except as it pertains to our Commandery.  We should each ask ourselves “Are the reasons I became a SK being fulfilled or am I disappointed?   What can I do about it?”   One place to start is to attend our monthly conclaves on a regular basis.   Enjoy the fellowship of our meals at 6:30.  Bring a friend or better yet, bring a signed petition for a new SK.  I have heard it said that the reason some members don’t come is the uniform or the sword.  While these items are important, we would rather have your companionship.

We can show you how to assemble a rather inexpensive outfit and the commandery has a few swords which one can rent; so, why wait?

Further; how is your eyesight?  What a great charity we have in the  Knight Templar Eye Foundation (KTEF).

SK Bob Mayer underwent knee surgery (other knee) and is recuperating at home. SK Edwin Carpenter fell and tore his Quadriceps, laying him up for a while; but, you can’t keep a good man down.   It was a real honor and pleasure to see Ed, back in circulation at our January Conclave, albeit with a cane.  Speaking of the January Conclave; what a joy it was to have so many past commanders present.   We nearly had enough to fill every chair.   What a wonderful job and example they did in conducting the opening and closing under the leadership of SK Doug Jordan in the East.  REGC of DC  Paul Newhall; REGC Buddy Wagner and SK ‘Robert Novak, Jr; DDGHP for the 17th Capitular District were in attendance.

SK Barry Bartley even got a break from his travels to honor us with his presence.  SK John Wigglesworth was in attendance, as usual,  and continues to do a wonderful job with our charities.  What an asset he is.  SK’s Michael Coleman, Jeffrey Holbrook and Mike Kastle rounded out the list of Past Commanders.   Our Generalisimo, SK Frank Wychoff and SW  SK Tony LaCava were also in attendance.  Thanks to each of you for your attendance and support.

Did you know that Piedmont Commandery is among the leaders if not the leader, in Virginia at least, having the most Past Commanders serve as Grand Commander and/or High Priest?  This is something to be proud of.   Although these gentlemen have had their turn in the “Hot Seat” so to speak, they are consistently our backbone in Piedmont Commandery.   Many of them seldom miss a conclave.  Without them, we could not survive.    My hat is off with sincerest gratitude for their continued loyalty and service to the craft.

Correspondence Course

Interested in learning more about the Commandery?  A new correspondence course has been developed and is available.  See the information below.

Tactics, Constitutions & Supplies

For the purpose of supporting the Leadership and Correspondence Course, the Grand Commandery is now providing copies of the Tactics and Constitutions for all interested Sir Knights. All checks should be made out to the Grand Commandery of Virginia and sent to the Eminent Grand Recorder, Sir Knight Dan Rose at 4101 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, VA 23223-4999.

  • Tactics - $10
  • Constitutions - $8
  • Proceedings (may be older copy) - $10
  • Binders - $10

Note:   Our recorder now has a few copies of the manual.  Please let us know if you need a copy.

One of the greatest sources of training is right in our own Commandery.  You can learn a lot, by sitting on the sidelines, but more from your own participation.

           Thought for the Month

Surely, you have heard the story about the industrious ant and the lazy grasshopper.   Which are you?

Looking Ahead

I implore the support of each SK who are within the length of their cable tow, to attend the February 28 Conclave.   We will serve dinner at 6:30 and then proceed to receive our DDGC SK Dave Morris who will also conduct his inspection.

               Philanthropy

The Knight Templar Eye Foundation is such an important Philanthropy effort. Don’t forget to contribute to this worthy cause to the best of your ability. Did you know that when you joined this Commandery, you purchased one lifetime membership in the foundation for $30?  We shouldn’t stop there.  I suggest you set a reasonable goal, i.e. one new membership each year.  The second area of our support is an annual Holy Land Tour for young pastors.  Since 1984, over 50 pastors have been given this opportunity.  Finally, we support the Baldwin-Brown Fund begun in 1998 by SK Richard Baldwin as an endowment to support the Grand Conclave. A nice diamond pin is awarded for the donation of $150.

                              *****

         Are Your Dues Current?

Please check your dues card and if not current, please remit your dues in the amount of $44. to our Recorder and attend this important matter.  Please do not forget to include an extra donation for the Knight’s Templar Eye Foundation.

WANTED

I am looking for a SK who would be willing to enter the line process finishing the year off as Jr. Warden.  If you are interested in serving in any capacity, please let me know.  Also, don’t forget new member petitions; additionally don’t forget your Royal Arch Chapter.   Also, someone who would like to serve as Prelate.
